Remove catchall

From Webpipe Wiki

What is a "CatchAll" account

A "CatchAll" in your email is when the email server for your domain is configured to accept mail for any name that is sent to an email address that ends in yourdomain.com. You specify one real mailbox that all mail goes to if it doesn't have a valid account. CatchAll accounts used to be useful to protect against mis-spellings and for general names (ie: sales@yourdomain.com) but since email is so widely used and so easy to configure, these reasons no longer make much sense. CatchAll accounts may still be useful in some specific configurations, but if you wonder if you need one, you probably don't.

Why should I delete my catchall?

Webpipe recommends AGAINST using a "Catch All" email account on your domain. These accounts rarely serve any real purpose, and they open a door for spammers and viruses to send hundreds of messages to you. For example, a common practice for spammers is to send emails to common names like "bob@yourdomain.com" and "greg@yourdomain.com". If you have a catchall account, then these messages will be accepted and delivered to your inbox.

Another common practice for spammers and viruses is to send out messages that say they are from someone@yourdomain.com. When the remote mail server rejects the message it sends the bounce to somebody@yourdomain.com, if you have a catchall, you will receive all of those emails (sometimes thousands at a time).

Our latest spam filtering services require that you don't have a catchall on your domain because it verifies that the mail account exists before even accepting the message.

Procedure for removing your catchall account

Before removing your catchall, you should set up email aliases for any addresses that you do want to accept mail to but don't already exist. For example, many companies have regular "named" email address for their employees (ie: bob@somedomain.com) and set up an alias for their "function" (ie: sales@somedomain.com or support@somedomain.com) to forward to a particular user.

To add email aliases, return to the main Mail administration screen, and click the "New Aliases" link. You will be prompted for the mail account, and the alias name.

For information on setting up email forwards, see the "Qmail Forwards" article.

To remove the catchall from your domain's email account, log into your mail administration page at http://mail.yourdomain.com/

In the lower form that says "E-mail Administration" enter the following:

Master Account: postmaster
Domain Name: yourdomain.com
Password: <YOUR PASSWORD>

Once logged in, click on the "Email Accounts" link. If you don't have a catchall set-up, It will say "CatchAll: Deleted" near the top of the window. If you do have a catchall, you can click on the "Set catchall email deleted" link near the bottom of the page.
